The fight against SARS-CoV2 has been brutal on so many levels. As with most viral diseases and pandemics, the only effective way to fight this battle is through vaccination. An innovative approach to SARS-CoV2 vaccination has emerged recently using mRNA technique (Pfizer and Moderna vaccines) and has shown very promising results with an efficacy of 92 to 94 percent with a safety profile similar to other viral vaccines. The fear around new techniques developed in such a short period of time is understandable; however, people need to trust the science behind it, especially that the vaccine have been authorized for emergency use by the FDA, EMA and WHO. EVERYONE should get vaccinated according to the national prioritization scheme, most prominently the elderly, and people with health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cardiac diseases, asthma, and cancer. Vaccines are not recommended for those below the age of 16 due to the limited information around safety and efficacy in this age group, and contraindicated for people with known allergies to a component of the vaccine. Having other types of allergies in general is not a contraindication, but the person needs to be monitored for side effects in a hospital setting for 30 minutes after the shot. Pregnant women are at higher risk of complications from COVID-19 infection as compared to other women of child-bearing age; however due to the currently limited information, only women at high risk fitting the priority group profile such as HCWs and those with underlying medical conditions can take the vaccine after consultation with their physician. The vaccine is Safe. Please don't hesitate to take it to protect yourself and your loved ones.
