يوم جديد – داء الصرع

يوم جديد – داء الصرع مع طبيبة الدماغ والأعصاب كارين أبو خالد
Epsilon is a non-profit organization founded in October 2013 (registration number 1916) and dedicated to support patients who suffer from epilepsy and their families and its main goals are: Improve epilepsy image and awareness in the community Support epileptic patients and their families medically, socially and psychologically and defend their rights in order to improve their quality of life. Provide these patients financial contribution (or other) in order to cover medications, any necessary tests, or surgical interventions. Several patients per month get contributions for epilepsy presurgical work-up or surgery in several hospitals. Medications supply especially lately following the social and financial covid-19 related issues and Beirut blast after a lot of patients lost medical coverage and needed our help to get anti-epileptic drugs. Psychological/ social support given to around 50 patients/year through our psychiatry/ psychology team.
Our major achievement was the school awareness campaign in collaboration with the ministry of education (Abou Khaled KJ et al. Impact of epilepsy training on school teachers and counselors: an intervention study in Lebanon. Epilepsy Behav Rep, 2020(14)). Each year we also plan a scientific event and an awareness campaign in November since it’s Epilepsy awareness month. This year the scientific event was a webinar on wednesday november 18th and hosted Pr Lawrence Hirsch, an eminent epileptologist from Yale/ USA. Our campaign will be centered against stigmatization and social discrimination mostly in schools and workplace. We are planning to have a campaign this year to Raise awareness but also funds in order to be able to buy medications and cover surgery expenses to our patients. After the explosion and following all the financial issues in the country our patients are facing several challenges and obstacles: Some have lost their loved ones and their house and are currently getting social and psychological support by Epsilon.
Some have lost their job and some were even stigmatized and asked to leave their job because they are on “medications”. Losing a job means also losing their insurance or social security medical coverage. Some still have a job but can’t find their medications in the pharmacies. These medications are very delicate and some patients are on a specific medication that has no generic or substitute and for some reason the medical aids to Lebanon didn’t include this category of medications and included mostly cardiac and blood pressure medications… our patients are struggling! Sincerely, Karine Karine Abou Khaled MD, MSc, FAES, ABPN Neurology, Epilepsy
