Early October 1941 - View of the Beirut-Rayak railway line winding through Dahr-el-Baidar Pass, during the Australian Army 2/8 Battalion's move to Ras Baalbek Camp in the Beqaa Valley, Syria (now Lebanon)

IMAGE INFO
– Viewpoint is looking west-south-west (back towards Beirut & the coast) from the Beirut-Rayak road (now the Beirut-Damascus International Highway).
– Dahr-el-Baidar station seen in the foreground is 37.6 kilometres from Beirut & sits at an altitude of 1,487 metres, being the highest point of the line. The line has since been removed but the ruins of the station & the protective snow galleries still exist (see link to amazing modern day image in the comments section).
– The mountain range here is covered in snow during winter, thus the need for construction of the protective snow galleries.

– Digitized using a Canon Canoscan 8800F scanner.
– Restored from the badly scratched & faded original quality, using Adobe Photoshop CS Windows (sepia duo-tone version).
