Bachir Gemayel of the Lebanese Phalange Party was elected President on 23 August 1982. There was joy all over the Christian sector of Beirut, some celebrating by shooting in the air. Gemayel was assassinated 24 days later, on the 14th of September, before he could take up the office of President.
